New Pup is Visiting

Dear Jasmine,
My humans are always inviting friends over who also bring their dogs with them. It makes me uncomfortable having another dog in the house that I do not know. My humans expect me to instantly become friends with this stranger dog but I can’t help but be territorial when they start to play with my toys without asking, get into my crate and get the attention of my humans. I don’t want to be a bad dog but this is a stranger in my house for goodness sake!!! What should I do?

Territorial Pup

Dear Territorial Pup,
You have every right to feel this way and LOTS of other dogs feel the same way (including me). Something your humans should realize is that it is hard to bring another dog into the home without a proper introduction. For instance, your humans should always remove your favorite possessions before a new pup comes to your house- don’t worry you will get them back once the other pup leaves! Also, your humans should try a neutral meeting place next time for you and another dog to use to get acquainted. This prevents your from becoming territorial because you aren’t at your home. After you two are friendly then they can try introducing visits at your house.

Good luck territorial pup!!

I am a three year old German Shepherd from South Georgia.  I don’t really have a favorite toy because my favorite things are sleeping and getting petted on the head. Although if I do get up some energy I will admit that I love getting into the trash to look for napkins.

My brother Teddy is lots of fun to play with, plus he usually takes the blame for my chewing.  I really like him for that!  I love to bark a lot; sometimes my humans do not appreciate that so much.  I am SUPER special because I am a white German Shepherd and that is not so common I hear.
