“These (doggie) Eyes..”

In the mid 1960′s there was a song by the rock group “The Guess Who”  called “These Eyes”.  It was a beautiful ballad in which a guy declared his love for a gal using images as seen through his eyes.

Every evening when I arrive home from the office and enter the house, I am greeted by the wonderful joy in my dog’s eyes.  I can’t help but think of the song by “The Guess Who”  when I see Jasmine jumping and wagging wildly every evening wen I walk through the kitchen door.

There is something wonderful about the eyes of our best friend and fellow family member.  A dog’s eyes are very expressive, and very honest.  There is always love there, and it is always shown no matter what mood I happen to be in when I come home.  I get the same look and wags if I am relaxed and happy or if I am ready to chew a 2×4 in half because of traffic on the expressway.

A number of studies have been done about the relaxing benefit that a dog brings to the household.  There is even evidence I am told that show lower heart attack risks for those who own a dog.  Wow,  those eyes are really powerful.

But why is that, why are those eyes always as steady as rocks, and so unaffected by our mood.  I believe it is because there is a connection that dogs make with their humans that is in a category far above what we know as human emotions.  There is a dependency on humans in a household for food, water, and that sort of thing, but there is a commitment and a connection that dogs make with their human that is unaffected by the day to day grind we all experience.  And isn’t it wonderful that at least one of us (our dog) has sense enough to have that connection be stronger than bad traffic on the expressway.

What is your opinion, and have you experienced the look of “These eyes”?   Please feel free to add your thoughts and experiences.   May all your Waggin’ be Delightful.

Our featured dog is Biko, a great “mutt” that is a mix of Golden Lab, Corgi and Chow.  Biko is 4 years old and lives in Georgia.  Biko loves playing with stuffed bunnies and a good game a tug of war is sure to bring a happy “grrrrroooowww”.  Biko is a snuggler and passes the day by “running like a mad man and then napping hard.”  Mom says that Biko’s eyebrows are so special and  a little rub in the armpits will bring on a waggin’ tail!
