Happy Dog, Happy Planet

Welcome Home!

Getting a “welcome home” greeting from your dog is unlike any other greeting you get in your life.  Even a dog who is not a jumper like Jasmine cannot help herself if you have been out for the day and you have now arrived.

Mike is now working at the office rather than at home, and as the day winds down and I close my computer she instinctively knows that it is almost time for daddy to arrive!  She will wait in the kitchen for 30 minutes, whining at the door, sniffing and listening for any clue that the garage door is opening.  She circles, she wags, she pants, she cannot contain the ensuing excitement.  At last the garage door is opening and she stands on her hind legs for a glance out the window.  She knows jumping is not good manners and does not lean on the door, but she has to see if he is here if even for a millisecond look!

As Mike approaches the door she is beside herself with excitement.  And has he walks in all restraints are off as she reaches up in a little “jump dance” and puts her paws around him and she whines and she licks.  It is the greatest thing to watch and you can tell she is filled with relief and joy that he has again returned.

I often joke that perhaps I should start licking and dancing when Mike arrives so that I get the attention first.  I have learned that I cannot compete in this venue.  When Mike does make his way towards me for a “hello kiss” Jasmine pops right between us so that we will not forget that we have a dog!

This is a daily occurance at our house.  One that is dependable, repeatable and always brings smiles.  It is nice to have those routines, those things you can always count on.  Jasmine is that constant force for us.  How about you?  What do you always know you can count on your pup for?

Our featured dog is Biko, a great “mutt” that is a mix of Golden Lab, Corgi and Chow.  Biko is 4 years old and lives in Georgia.  Biko loves playing with stuffed bunnies and a good game a tug of war is sure to bring a happy “grrrrroooowww”.  Biko is a snuggler and passes the day by “running like a mad man and then napping hard.”  Mom says that Biko’s eyebrows are so special and  a little rub in the armpits will bring on a waggin’ tail!
