Dog Legacies
This weekend, we gave Jasmine a bone; nothing new but she has such a routine when you do this. The freezer opens and she heads into the kitchen hoping that it is bone time. She takes it with delight and sprints off. She chews for a bit, then puts in her mouth and begins to whine. She is looking for a place to bury it.
She learned this routine from Max, a wonderful golden retriever that was in his later years when we got Jasmine. He mentored her in those months when she was a pup and he was a much wiser one with some years on. Max used to do the same with a bone. Wander around, whining until he found a safe place for it. Max passed away and that following Christmas we were hanging lights outside. I looked down and saw a bone from Max. I knew it was his by the way it was placed and the size of it. He was much larger than Jasmine and his bones were too! We decided to leave it outside in plain view. It was a message from Max we felt; something he had left us to discover at some time down the road.
Dogs have great intuition–Max knew he was at the end of his time, Max knew that he needed to teach Jasmine some things before he left and he knew he wanted to leave something behind for us. The bone wasn’t buried, just sitting there saying “hello, remember me? I remember you.”
Happy waggin’ today!
